Doctor J. Apffelstaedt, Course Director

Doctor Justus Apffelstaedt is a specialist surgeon with a particular interest in breast, thyroid and parathyroid health management, as well as soft tissue surgical oncology. Being responsible for the management of an estimated 10 000 breast cancer cases for 23 years as head of a busy tertiary breast health service, he has a wealth of clinical experience. He has a specific interest in breast imaging and its correlation to pathology. He has served on the faculty of national and international ultrasound training courses.

Doctor Apffelstaedt has published about 50 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, both nationally and internationally, presented more than 60 invited papers at national and international scientific meetings and has had about 100 scientific papers read at national and international scientific meetings. Doctor Justus Apffelstaedt is registered as a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), a Fellow of the College of Surgeons of South Africa, is a Founding Member of Breast Surgery International, founded and was the first President of The Breast Interest Group of Southern Africa (BIGOSA), is a Fellow of the International Union Against Cancer and has attended an International Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in the USA.

Dr. Lyn Fortuin

Doctor Lyn Fortuin is a general practitioner at Apffelstaedt and Associates with a special interest in women’s health, breast and thyroid health. She graduated with an MBChB from the University of Cape Town in 2007. She obtained the ACLS in 2010 and the Diploma in Obstetrics in 2012. Dr Fortuin has attended the “Diagnosis of breast diseases using the multimodality approach” course by Prof László Tabár; the BISSA Breast Imaging Congress and the ICE congress on thyroid ultrasound and attended several scientific congresses of the Breast Interest Group of Southern Africa (BIGOSA).
Dr Fortuin has solid experience in breast health management and interventional procedures.

Dr. Nici Zeeman

Dr Nici Zeeman is a general practitioner with a special interest in breast health and is a member of the medical team at Apffelstaedt and Associates. She attended the “Multimodality Detection and Diagnosis of Breast Diseases” course by Prof László Tabár. Dr Zeeman has solid experience in breast health management and interventional procedures. She lectured and tutored at previous breast ultrasound courses including the International Breast Ultrasound Course in Nairobi, Kenya in 2015. Dr Zeeman has attended the International Congress of Endocrinology (ICE); the Thyroid Ultrasound Course in Melbourne, Australia; several scientific congresses of the Breast Interest Group of Southern Africa (BIGOSA) as well as the European Breast Cancer Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

Mrs Avril Lourens

Mrs Lourens is Head of Imaging at Apffelstaedt and Associates. She qualified as a Diagnostic Radiographer in 1973 and obtained the additional qualification as Mammographer in 2007. She spent several years at a Private Radiology practice in Mammography. Mrs Lourens attended the “Multimodality Detection and Diagnosis of Breast Diseases” courses by Prof László Tabár as well as an International Breast Ultrasound Course at the University of Ferrara, Italy. Mrs Lourens attended the BISSA Breast Imaging Congress; thyroid ultrasound courses and several scientific congresses of the Breast Interest Group of Southern Africa (BIGOSA). She was one of the lecturers at the International Breast Ultrasound Course in Nairobi, Kenya in 2015.

Mrs Karlien La Douce

Mrs Karlien La Douce obtained her Diagnostic Radiography National Diploma in 1993 and worked for several years in a private radiology practice. She was appointed as a diagnostic radiographer and mammographer at Apffelstaedt and Associates in January 2007. She attended the internationally recognised ultrasound course by Prof László Tabár, the “Intensive breast ultrasound: A histo-pathologically based approach to diagnostic and screening breast ultrasound” offered by Dr Thomas Stavros as well as the “Finding breast Cancer in early stages’” course by Prof László Tabár. Mrs La Douce attended the BISSA Breast Imaging Congress, the thyroid ultrasound courses and several scientific congresses of the Breast Interest Group of Southern Africa (BIGOSA).
Mrs La Douce has tutored and lectured at previous breast ultrasound courses.

All work in a specialised breast service and have attended international courses in breast imaging and have a wealth of experience in breast ultrasound.
